Letters to my people…(Be the power)
I am black. Not too long ago, I was told I was “So white”. Was I offended? No. But it did make me re-think what the definition of ‘black’ really was. When people think of black people its unfortunate but it is assumed the we are rude, intimidating, have no concept of rules, struggle to succeed, and talk in a certain way. Even some black people think this.
I have a few questions, why does abiding by every rule make you white? Why do we question why certain black person are rich? Why do we determine by the way someone speaks, or acts ,or what they do or do not know make them not black? There are too many rules on what counts as being black! If I take up the description of what is questioned, that would mean black people:
- Should talk in an unflattering or an incorrect way as if one were illiterate (since one may be judged on whether they are ‘black’ or not, simply by the way they talk)
- Be poor and struggle to make ends meet (since we question the legitimacy of somebody’s success)
- Should break rules and commit illegal acts…. the list goes on…
But, we dont realize this is the same thing, the exact same image we campaign against! The funny thing is black people are extremely strong, capable and dedicated! – which is not only shown through the abolishment of slavery and the gaining of equal rights, but in this whole stereotypical image that many seem to be keeping up- its almost as if its pride -’ because this is my stereotype I will fulfill it’ , yet you will ask ‘ how dare they judge me, I have equal rights!’.
But who loses out? US! Not “them”, us. Yourself, your kids, and even your grandchildren. Although, we have had many doors opened for us by many of our great revolutionaries and leaders, it only takes a few to tarnish the job and limit how many can go through that door, or even how many want to go through the door in the first place- I personally feel its because we are scared to be seen as ‘caring about what they think’ and ’we don’t want them to think were not happy where we are or who we are’. (Without realizing we are not happy where we are, and this is not who we are- every human was born with the right to succeed, so why not you?).This pride, it will stop many of us from prospering as fast as we could.
This pride is not “Black pride”, this pride is stupidity. Black pride represents, power, prosperity, and joy from being successful despite our bleak past. Its about moving on into the future, and yet too many are holding back. Don’t. If many of us would just recognize the real definition of being black, just imagine the amount of endless success.
At the end of the day it is the way you present yourself- your conduct, speech etc that entices and makes people to want to take you on a journey of success, its rules and time abiding that makes you reliable, its a good attitude that make people want to be around you. These are not the qualities of someone who ‘isn’t black’, these are the qualities of someone who is smart, and eager to have a good life. And, I know Black people are more than capable of this. Don’t fight the power, be the power!
My Love. x
